  • 1.  Finding Average (Mean) Census Data

    Posted 02-03-2022 04:01 PM

    Greetings Colleagues,

There are times when simple Census data such as the mean is helpful for my work. Oftentimes, the Median is available, but the Mean is not.

Today, I was able to download tract level data for HHs by Income, and HH Size by Available Vehicle, but not Tract level average income by Total HHs, or average number of Vehicles by Total HHs.

I will also be looking for average HH Size.

I doubt this is a privacy issue at this scale.

    Thoughts?

    Thank You,

    David

    Hi David,

If you want the mean average, calculate it.

Table B19025 has total "aggregate income" in any geog.

Table B25046 has total "aggregate number of vehicles" possessed by households.

Those numbers can be divided by the number of households (the total line from table B11001)... and the result is the average per household.

Is there an accurate way to get mean HH Size at Tract level? Some files have HH Size, but the final category is HH Size of 4 plus which evades averaging.

There is always the CTPP, an ACS based special tab purchased by the state departments of transportation. http://data5.ctpp.transportation.org/ctpp1216/Browse/browsetables.aspx. Table B112108 (its a CTPP table number) is Mean # of peop/HH.

If you calculate it yourself make sure not to mix up universes, like including people in group quarters ;-)
