ACS 5 year data, single parent household with children, by race/ethnicity, by county

    Hi all

I'm looking for 5 year ACS data by county, by race/ethnicity, that shows single parent household with children. I'd like to see tables that show something like:

Of all families, percent that are Black single parent households with children

Of all families, percent that are Asian single parent households with children

    etc

S0109 sort of those something like this, but seems to show:

of all children in families with a male householder, percent that are Black, Asian, etc. Not quite what I'm looking for.

    Thanks

It's like you need B11003 or B/C11005 or B11012 iterated by race/ethnicity (not published unfortunately).

Hi Diana. Thanks. Looks like B11003 and b11005 and b11012 don't have race/ethnicity. Thanks though.

With microdata (IPUMS) you can get that with the number of children, marital status and race variables

Can I use PUMS to get data by county by race/ethnicity? Single parent households with children, -by county- by race/ethnicity ?

You can for many larger counties, but some PUMAs cross county boundaries. For a quick check, you can use the Geocorr application to see if your county (counties) of interest are full PUMAs or include any splits: https://mcdc.missouri.edu/applications/geocorr.html

Beth, thanks. New York State has 62 counties, many of them fairly small. Will that missouri site tell me if the smaller counties, like Hamilton, are full PUMAs?

It is not possible to identify all counties in New York.

IPUMS USA provides ACS PUMS data, with added variables that identify any county that exactly matches a set of PUMAs. The description of the COUNTYFIP variable includes a link to a doc that lists all identifiable counties since 1950.

Hi. The doc above has "Listing of counties identified". That file lists 31 counties in New York State. Does that mean PUMS only has data for 31 New York State counties?

Right, only 31 New York counties have been identifiable in any of the PUMS since 1950. The rest have not been identifiable in any year.

Okay, thanks. I was hoping to find something that showed data for all 62 counties in New York State.

... Clarification: The rest have not been identifiable in any year since 1950. With the 72-year limit on census privacy, we're now able to get complete microdata (not just "PUMS") for 1950 and earlier censuses. All counties are identifiable in those microdata. The complete 1950 microdata were only made public this year, though, so it'll be some time before we integrate those into IPUMS USA.

Does this mean something? I'm not exactly sure what I'm look ing at.

Oh that’s a good move! You can do it without maps

by county maybe but indirectly. I used to write about 3 counties in NY and I could find them with a combination of Super PUMAs and metro area, I had to look at maps to associate them
