  • 1.  Where to find ACS 2019 5-year Data?

    Posted 03-13-2023 04:56 PM

    Hello,

I've been looking for the ACS 2019 5-year data on https://www2.census.gov/ but I'm not able to find it. Does anyone know where the full data release is located?

Thanks so much for your help.

    Look at usa.ipums.org instead.

The census bureau says that all ACS files are available on https://www2.census.gov/, so it must be there. Did they say this in error?

Sorry misunderstood. I usually use the API and rarely use the summary files.

    Go to

    https://data.census.gov/table?q=B01001

You will see the table name B01001 AGE BY SEX

under that you will see "2021 ACS 1-year estimates Detailed Tables"

to the right of this is a little downward pointing arrow - click on it

use the pull down menu to select 2019 ACS 5-year Estimates Detailed Tables

Thanks Dave, this is a good approach if you want one table of data for one location, but I'm not sure how this would work if you wanted to download all tables for all geographies for the USA.

It seems everybody has a different preferred source! I'd summarize this way:

    • The Census Bureau's interactive data browsing interface is here: https://data.census.gov
    • Documentation and links to the complete 2019 5-year ACS summary files (detailed "B" and "C" tables) are here.
    • IPUMS USA is an alternative source for ACS public use microdata, with harmonized variables across time, thorough documentation, and lots of other helpful resources
    • IPUMS NHGIS is an alternative source of ACS summary files, enabling download of nationwide data files at any geographic level, corresponding nationwide GIS shapefiles, and time series tables that link 2019 5-year data with earlier census data. (I manage NHGIS, so I can tell you we're also on track to add all 5-year ACS data to our time series tables in the coming weeks.)

Thanks Jonathan, that second link is great, and thanks for the other links as well.

Thanks so much for the help everyone!

Does anyone else find it confusing that ACS data is in three locations on https://www2.census.gov/ ?

    (1) There are several ACS datasets listed in the root directory (e.g., acs2013_5yr)

    (2) then we have this directory with who knows what: https://www2.census.gov/acs/

    (3) and we also have: https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs/

This makes it very confusing to find files and causes users to go to the IPUMS website to get files. It feels like it needs to be cleaned up and reorganized.
