Need to download CT, county and state level agexrace data

  • 1.  Need to download CT, county and state level agexrace data

    Posted 04-18-2023 10:55 PM

    Greetings,

I am compiling an SDOH profile of persons age 55+ at the census tract level (plus the full City and state to compare) . I have most of what I need but am looking for an efficient way to download race for this population without having to download multiple race by age files (i.e. White by Age and so on) . Is this possible? I don't see where I can download this easily. I haven't used ACS directly in a while as my company used vendor software.

Any assistance, tips or hacks would be most appreciated!

ACS no. But this should work for you — age groups include one starting at 55 www.census.gov/.../2020s-counties-detail.html

I mean it would work by county. Tract I guess you’d have to go to ACS microdata maybe 5 year at IPUMS.org, not as sat right forward, sorry

    Thank you!

Grr. I suspected there wasn't an efficient path for CT level agexrace.

Via IPUMS NHGIS, you can select all of the Age x Race tables to download in a single file for each geographic level (one file for tracts, one for counties, etc.)

NHGIS is free to use with attribution.

Good idea but I don't see anything there by race and age for tracts (beyond the under 18/18 and over age groups from PL94 release) newer than 2010. I believe that's because normally the 2020 numbers would get more detailed versions in SF1 and SF2 files and that hasn't happened yet -- there's a new name for them and they're coming out soon, late May for the first one, details here www.census.gov/.../about-2020-data-products.html

NHGIS includes all ACS detailed tables going back to the 2009 5-year data, so that includes Sex by Age by Race tables for tracts for every ACS 5-year period. Any combo of data filters involving tracts, a 5-year period, or sex/age/race topics should bring those up in the "Select Data" table.

You're right I think there's something wrong with the boolean "or" in their interface -- I took out "or 2010" and I could see this set for 2017-21 , so you could assemble what you need from this with other race/ethnicity files you need --

Table: B01001H. Sex by Age (White Alone, Not Hispanic or Latino)
Universe: White alone, not Hispanic or Latino population

    to American
    Connecticut Age/Sex/Race/Hispanic by County
CT changed from Counties, which were just lines on the map, to County Equivalents, which are Regional Planning Districts, as of the 2020 Census and for the Estimates Starting in 2020. For estimates before then, there is no reasonable alternative. The closest you could get would be to reallocate the county data from before, based upon the population as reported in the population data by town. This could lead to some issues, but they would be hidden. Each county and each planning district is made up of in tact towns (MCDs). So you could do it based upon proportional allocation of the county results based upon the proportion of the towns total population compared to the county.

I think OP was referring to census tracts, not the postal abbreviation for Connecticut.

Tracts do not have the same race/age/sex/Hispanic breakdown as the counties. He is asking for the estimates, I think which run as a time series. They are partially redone when each Census comes out. Given the massive problems of quality and release dates of the 2020 Census, it is plain that estimates (which are now using a blended base that includes data from the 2010 Census, as well as the County 2020 Counts) are extremely important, since they are used to norm the ACS and many other surveys. At the county level with AGE/SEX/RACE/Hispanic Status they are released in June.
