  • 1.  create civilian non-institutionalized sample from Census beta analysis tool

    Hello -

To use the ACS microdata, 1-year, 2022 (ipums doesn't yet have 2022 posted) I've employed the BETA microdata analysis tool and created this table:

I need to ensure the table I create imitates the popular 'civilian non-institutionalized' population.

To isolate CIVILIANS - I've added this filter per posts I located : Employment status recode (ESR): all except: Armed Forces, At Work, Armed Forces, With a Job But Not At Work
There is an additional MILITARY variable which I initially employed but have now altered to the ESR variable.

Regarding non-institutionalized, however - the tool has a Group Quarters Population topic but no associated variables??
So I've recreated the table using that exclusion and retaining the Relationship (RELSHIPP): all except: Institutionalized group quarters population exclusion (until/if something better is found).

Very much appreciate guidance on the best way, using the Census Beta tool - to achieve the cut of the population to 'civilian non-institutionalized'

I can't speak to whether the Census Bureau uses similar variables or something else in the unpublished data, but when developing non-institutionalized estimates, I also use the RELSHIPP variable.

Did you check out the PUMS TYPEHUGQ variable ? (TYPE 2019 and earlier). You can merge on SERIALNO with the PUMS "person" dataset.

Thank you. I had chosen the RELSHIPP variable in the end! Seems ipums has now loaded the 2022 1-year ACS so I may learn that tool to have a more precise look.
