  • 1.  Downloading Subject Tables not through AFF?

    Posted 07-23-2014 10:35 AM
    Hello,

My agency currently downloads Summary File data from the Census FTP site, but I am curious to know if there is any way to download Subject Table data from the Census website that's not through American Fact Finder. We're looking to download a series of subject tables at a time, but don't want to have to select individual tables at individual geographies. Does anyone know of a tool or utility that can download subject tables?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

    Yep. It can be done!
It's a bit of a complicated process. You need to understand the structure of table shells, sequence numbers, etc... but that's all outlined in the technical documentation. See www2.census.gov/.../ACS_2012_SF_Tech_Doc.pdf

And for 2012 data and documentation, see:
    www2.census.gov/.../
(For other years, start at this page: www.census.gov/.../)

    Beth,

Thanks for your response. This is what we're doing for the summary file, but the summary file does not include subject tables (the tables that begin with S). Is there a separate download for subject tables that doesn't require going through American Fact Finder?

Apologies - I missed the subject-table portion of your inquiry.

I do not think it is possible to download all S tables anymore. That option was available from the FTP site in 2009 for the 5-year ACS (www2.census.gov/.../) but I do not see a similar download feature for more recent years...
