Help Monitor Changes in Federal Statistical Data Products

    Dear Federal Data Users:

We're reaching out to invite you to participate in a new "Citizen Science" initiative led by the American Statistical Association (ASA) as part of our project assessing and monitoring the health of federal statistical agencies.

This initiative seeks to track changes in federal statistical data releases-such as shifts in granularity, frequency, timeliness, and other characteristics. These changes may reflect improvements, deteriorations, or no substantial adjustments.

It is you, the data user community, who are the most knowledgeable and invested, and therefore best positioned to help us track such changes given the number, breadth, and detail of the federal statistical agency products.

    How You Can Help:

If you're willing to participate, please fill out the short form at this link to let us know which federal statistical data product(s) you'd be willing to monitor: Citizen Science Federal Statistics Monitoring Project - Google Forms

Starting in October 2025, we'll send a brief email every 3–4 months asking if you've noticed any changes in the product(s) you're tracking. If so, you'll be able to submit details and documentation via a follow-up form.

We especially need volunteers for products from the following agencies:

    • BJS (Bureau of Justice Statistics)

    • BTS (Bureau of Transportation Statistics)

    • EIA (Energy Information Administration)

    • ERS (Economic Research Service)

    • NASS (National Agricultural Statistics Service)

    • NCES (National Center for Education Statistics)

    • NCHS (National Center for Health Statistics)

    • NCSES (National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics)

    • ORES (Office of Research, Evaluation, and Statistics)

    • SOI (Statistics of Income Division)

If we reach saturation for a particular product, we may contact a subset of volunteers.

Your participation will help build a more accurate and comprehensive picture of the evolving federal statistical data landscape. If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Michelle Crosby at Michelle@amstat.org.

Thank you for considering this opportunity to contribute!
