    I'm the executive director of the Movement Advancement Project (MAP), which focuses on speeding equality and opportunity especially on topics of LGBTQ equality and democracy.

    Since my fellowship at the Williams Institute in 2008, I've worked to advance LGBTQI+ data inclusion especially on federal surveys.  Along with Caroline Medina @ the Institute at Whitman-Walker, I lead an LGBTQI+ Data Inclusion Working Group. We also led advocacy work for the addition of SOGI measures on the American Community Survey. 

    Excited to connect with anyone interested in pushing for LGBTQI+ data inclusion, tracking the removal of gender identity (and sexual orientation) measures since January 2025, and how to drive resources into LGBTQI+ research given the decimation of federal government funding.

    Hi, everyone! I'm Puneet Kollipara, a climate data scientist, analyst and communicator in Washington, DC who currently works as an independent consultant. I leverage open-source tools, open-geospatial tech, open data and open science in support of action on social and environmental challenges. In light of ongoing threats to federally supported open datasets, research and tools, I've also grown interested in how to bolster the long-term resilience of these and other "open ecosystems."

    Hi everyone, I'm Katie Hoeberling, the Director of Policy Initiatives at Open Environmental Data Project. We co-convene the Beyond Compliance network which acts collectively and advocates for more open, accessible, and interoperable regulatory environmental data and infrastructure in the US. We also members of the Public Environmental Data Partners (PEDP), a coalition archiving at risk federal environmental data. Archival is a stopgap for now as we can't update datasets, but we're starting to get into longer-term strategy to make these systems more resilient to political shocks, and to design federal data tools that are more responsive to environmental justice and climate action needs. PEDP is also affiliated with the Data Rescue Project.

    Hi, I'm JoAnne Negrin. I retired after 20 years teaching ESL and Spanish and an additional 12 years as a Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction for ESL, Bilingual Education, World Languages, and Performing Arts for a large New Jersey school district. I am now working as a consultant with a partner who also retired last year. I'm also a confessed data nerd. My heart is broken by what is happening to data at the national level. I did download .pdf copies of everything related to Multilingual Learners from USDE, IES, NCELA, and anyplace else I could think of back in January, but there were things I didn't get to in time. I am very concerned about what is happening to Multilingual Learners and their families on many, many levels, but as it pertains to this group, I am concerned because we need data in order to make data-driven decisions about instruction and programming. That data is also critical for advocacy. Thanks for letting me vent.

    I'm Margo Schlanger.  I'm a law professor at the University of Michigan, where I run the Civil Rights Litigation Clearinghouse.  We post documents and data relating to federal civil rights litigation.  Right now, we're taking a pretty capacious view of what that means, and posting narrative summaries, metadata, and documents from pretty much all the cases challenging Trump Administration actions.  (https://clearinghouse.net/trumpchallenges)

    My relevant interests are, especially, securing archives of government oversight documents -- filings of the DOJ Civil Rights Division and the various civil rights offices across government.  Also I worked at USDA in the Biden Administration, particularly focused (as relevant here) on data issues relating to equitable participation in programs.

    Its interesting how we drown in data, but do we ever look at the data. A few years back I asked the SF health dept why for over a year they had 7% ( a huge number) of deaths reported as unknown. They have great people and lots of money, so not a resource issue. So it wasn't an X-Files episode, but they simply forgot to send the updates in (they didn't know until I asked them and they checked int it). Deaths must be reported immediately, cause can be sent later (if needed) up to 2 months or so later, but they never did. So they, CA, and the CDC all missed it and it became part of the official numbers.  Lots of funky numbers almost everywhere you look, but no one is really looking. I am trying to review the upcoming census numbers (at least the tables and measures, data is much harder) immediately after the release. Early detection offers better chances of correction. Tracking changes is essential, but generally not done, keep trying.

    Hi everyone,

    My name is Ari Lamstein and I'm a software engineer and data scientist located in San Francisco.

    I've created a number of open-source tools that make it easier to analyze public datasets. The most of well-known of these is choroplethr, a suite of R packages for making choropleth maps. I connected it to the Census API, which made it easier to to create maps of Census data.

    Most recently I've been building similar projects in Python. The first one was the Covid Demographics Explorer, which highlights how US Counties changed after Covid-19. And I just completed an app that uses data from TRAC to highlight how Immigration Enforcement has changed in recent years (link).

    Hi Deborah,

    Thank you so much for the kind words. I will look into creating a new thread about the app now (I had not considered it before).

    Believe it or not, I had actually not heard of NILC or the Migration Policy before. This is probably because I'm more of a technologist who builds things to answer my own questions more than someone with deep experience in immigration policy. I simply don't know who is working in the field.

    Hi everyone - I am Joe Langsam.  I, long ago, retired from Morgan Stanley where I had responsibility for fixed incomed analytic research.
    I, proudly, was one of the early members of the Committee to Establish a National Institute of Finance which, sadly, could not establish  
    such an institution but did produce the early work that led to the legislation that created the Office of Financial Research.
    Subsequent to my retirement from Morgan Stanley, I served two terms on the Board of Mathematical Sciences and
    Analytics (National Academies).  I am a member of the Board of Governors of ACTUSfrf, a 501 C3 organization.  
    ACTUS - the Algorithmic Contract Types Unified Standards - is a global initiative to bring clarity, consistency, and
    precision to the way financial contracts are represented and analyzed.

    I am part of a small group that is interested learning about efforts to curate data and produce statistics to supplement 
    the data and statistics that is being lost due to Federal budget and personnel actions.  We are aware of the many efforts to
    protect data and statistics that had been posted on Government websites, but don't know of the efforts to collect and curate
    data and produce statistics to supplement that which no longer will be produced by Federal agencies.  I would be delighted to

    Was led to this list serve in the context of a working on a story about real-world consequences for state and local government from disappearing federal data. (That could take a book, of course. )

    I know things are constantly changing, but hoping to be sure I at least have a correct sense of the most important data streams that have been taken offline already or discontinued. Also hearing about valuable tools for queries that are gone, even if the data is still available. I will file something by August 13.

    Hi everyone! I'm starting a new position as an Associate Demographic Research Scientist at the NYC Department of City Planning. I'm a sociologist and demographer (PhD, University of Minnesota + graduate trainee at the Minnesota Pop Center) and I recently wrapped up my postdoc at the Population Research Center at UT-Austin.
