  • 1.  Tracking Education Data Changes

    Posted 07-17-2025 10:10 AM

Hi folks, I am working on a project with Advance Illinois to comprehensively track recent changes to education data collections as part of a broader project thinking about what those changes might mean for states. I am trying to learn more about related efforts underway in this space. I am tracking things like the Data Rescue Project and Data Index, but wondered if you all might be aware of other related groups or initiatives. Any insights or connections would be greatly appreciated!

Hi. In addition to Data Rescue Project and Data Index, there are a few additional groups/initiative that might fit into this bucket:
    • Environmental Data & Governance Initiative: https://envirodatagov.org/" style="cursor: pointer; color: #0000FF">https://envirodatagov.org/, this group is focused on, as the same suggests, environmental data.
    • I believe that group also supports the Public Environmental Data Partners, which is a volunteer group that seeks to preserve data - most notably some of the tools that were part of Trumps EOs (like the Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool)
    • Data Refuge is another (https://www.datarefugestories.org/" style="cursor: pointer; color: #0000FF">https://www.datarefugestories.org/)

I'm sure there are more but these were ones that came to mind and I added to with a quick search. Hope this helps.

    Hi,

I'm one of the organizers for the Data Rescue Project. Just a note that Data Refuge has been and is still defunct. We are the functional successor to that effort.

    Bonsoir !

    Merci !

I think you might also find these resources interesting:

    • The American Statistical Association is tracking changes to fed statistical agencies, including changes to NCES.  You have to scroll a bit to find what you're looking for, but I like the detail they include!
    • Data Foundation has been tracking changes to federal data and evidence, then producing regular monthly Evidence Capacity Pulse Reports.  Make sure you download the full report - the part that's on the website is just the "key findings," but you'll probably be interested in the detail in the full reports.
    • A group of folks from different research universities have been tracking changes to government information in this Government Information Tracker.  It includes lots of website in addition to datasets, which might be valuable based on your purposes.

Those are some of my own favorites that I think would meet your needs, but very curious to hear which ones other folks are using!

    Best,

    Meghan
