Is anyone else having trouble downloading data from data.census.gov? I get the preparing your files message and then nothing? I've tried canceling and restarting, but still stuck in the preparing you files phase. Wondering if it's a site issue or just something on my end.

You can get county level unemployment back to 1990 from the BLS. https://www.bls.gov/data/ Look under Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS).
